Baldwin County, Alabama
Led by the efforts of the visionary superintendent Dr. Alan Lee, the Digital Renaissance initiative in the Baldwin County Public School System is beginning its third year of the Digital Renaissance movement. This innovative, powerful educational initiative allows us to introduce new learning tactics and strategies to students through advanced technology and other learning resources from the twenty-first century. We are implementing a one-to-one initiative in which, over time, each and every student will have a computer device in hand. Through the integration and application of technology, students are provided with a toolkit that will help them to become globally competitive upon their entrance into either the workforce or postsecondary education. Moreover, through the use of the software product, students will be further empowered to connect what they are learning in the classroom with real-world careers and postsecondary learning opportunities. Istation is one of the software products providing our students with this empowerment—the empowerment to read.
Baldwin County Public Schools began implementation of Istation in August 2012 with the first assessments taken by our students in September in grades K-8. Our students and teachers love Istation and the data show it. For grades K-3, the gains in Tier 1 from September to May increased more than 10% across these grade levels. Advanced Reading scores also showed significant gains in Tier 1 students with the greatest gains of 10% in 4th and 5th grades. We feel so strongly in the program’s capability to increase reading ability for students that we began using the program with our high school students identified with a significant weakness in reading.
Istation has provided the ability to meet the needs of Tier 2 and Tier 3 students through the use of the student Istation application. In addition to the student Istation app, the teacher-directed lessons and teacher resources have equipped our teachers with the tools to provide that additional help for our students who need reading intervention.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with Istation to best meet the needs of our students, K-12 grades. As we begin our second year with Istation, the energy surrounding the use of Istation in our schools is exciting!
Orange Beach, Alabama
At Orange Beach Elementary School, we saw significant gains in reading through the implementation of Istation. Our greatest improvement was in 5th grade with a 12% increase in Tier 1 students. 6th grade had an 11% increase in Tier 1 students, and 1st grade had a 10% in Tier 1 in students. We implemented an "“ISIP™ Club”" in which students came to the computer lab before school to practice reading skills using Istation. Students who showed significant progress and effort were recognized on the school Web site and received special awards during the year. The students at OBES enjoyed using Istation and were particularly fond of reading and learning from the informational texts. I would definitely recommend Istation. Our students became highly motivated to improve their reading achievement through the use of this program.
