“Innovation” Contest Winner: Debbie Herring

Debbie Herring is the winner of our “Innovation” Classroom Contest! From February 1 to April 30, 2016, we asked educators to tell us how they use Istation in exciting and innovative ways to help students grow. Read on to see how Ms. Herring is innovating with Istation:

Ms. Herring, an educator with 14 years of experience, is currently the RTI specialist for kindergarten – 6th grade and the dyslexia teacher in the small west Texas town of Ira. Now in her third year in Ira, Ms. Herring said she loves working with RTI students and seeing their growth! Ms. Herring also has a daughter set to graduate from her alma mater, Texas Tech University, this year. In her free time, Ms. Herring enjoys the company of family and friends, crafting, and decorating. She also enjoys brainstorming new ideas for next year’s classroom and designing motivational Istation boards for her students.

How do you use Istation in innovative and exciting ways?

In our classroom “American Minion Warrior” is [an avatar representing] . . . motivation. The AMW board is an obstacle course. Students have their own personal American Minion Warrior. The AMW makes its way across the course by moving through each obstacle on a monthly basis. Movement depends on an increase in overall reading. If there is no increase shown on the ISIP™ graph, then the AMW can’t move and must wait until the next month to move on the course. The goal for each student is to make it to the finish line and ring the bell by the end of the school year.

How does this innovative use of Istation lead to student motivation and growth?

Each month, my RTI students look forward to taking the ISIP. I tell them, “This is the day you can beat yourself and become the AMW winner in your class.” As they are taking the assessment, I monitor closely, and each student makes certain that I’m watching as their graph appears. If it increases, I make sure to make a big deal out of it. If it decreases or stays the same, I encourage them to keep working to increase the graph on the next tested skill. The next day after completing the ISIP, the American Minion Warrior in each class is honored. We applaud, give high fives, and place the winner’s name on our board. Each winner receives a prize for being the monthly winner. Since we are nearing the end of the school year, there is a lot of buzz about whether or not they will complete the course. These American Minion Warriors love Istation and they love winning!
