Make the Most of National Poetry Month with Istation

by Lindsey Joyce on April 19, 2016

This month marks the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month! Founded in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, National Poetry Month has become the largest literary celebration in the world!

To help educators and students celebrate the 20th anniversary, we’ve put together a list of Istation poetry resources. These poems address phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, and writing. We hope you enjoy them and celebrate great poetry all month long.

“Clem the Clam”

“Clem the Clam” is a rhyming poem that is a lot of fun to read aloud. Full of consonant blends, this poem is ideal for early readers. Here’s a one-stanza preview:

Clem the Clam can snip,

Fast as a whip!

Clem the Clam can clip,

Fast as a whip!

“Rain”

“Rain” is a rhyming poem about rain that incorporates skills such as rhyming and word patterns. This is a great poem for beginners. Here’s a preview:

Soak the road and run in the drain.

Soak the crops and soak the plain.

Soak the leaves and soak the grass.

Drip on the sills and slip on the glass.

“Sound Song”

Transitional and intermediate readers will love “Sound Song,” a fun rhyming poem about sounds and onomatopoeia. Here’s a sample:
