Our blog "How Istation Can Help Teach Character Traits"proved quite popular! Senior Curriculum Development Specialist Natalie Masters has a few more ideas about using Istation in this way. Masters oversees development of Timeless Tales, Istation’s reading and language arts instruction for older readers.
She offers these additional suggestions:
- When teachers know their students have been on Timeless Tales, they can ask their students to share thoughts on what they read that day. This can be a whole-class activity which can serve as a sort of wrap-up to computer time. Ask students to recommend passages to one another or provide a short summary. Ask them if the main characters acted the way the students would have acted and why.
- When students complete reading in the World of Wonders at the end of each unit, they are required to create a written response before moving on to the next unit of instruction. These writing assignments are sent directly to the teacher through Istation’s reporting engine. Teachers can use these responses as starting places for discussion, writer’s workshop activities, and/or to monitor and evaluate student responses to the lessons in Timeless Tales.
- Teachers can use Teacher Station to find appropriate Timeless Tales passages, lessons, activities, and stories. A short synopsis allows teachers to quickly scan and identify not only instructional goals but also the overall theme and related character traits.
