Moving the Needle One Tier at a Time

Michele Lovett, a 1st grade teacher at Waldron Elementary in Arkansas, has been using Istation for one year. She finds that Istation’s data reports have improved the way she is able to deliver interventions and the way her students perform. Check out her story below!

One of the greatest challenges as a teacher is knowing if what I am doing each day is beneficial to my students. We have many assessments at the beginning of the year that can be very daunting, especially as a new teacher. I love that Istation gives me all the data that I need from one assessment.

Istation extrapolates the student data beyond the typical above, below, or standard categories. This information has allowed me to see where students struggle so that I can provide beneficial lessons to the whole class, small groups, and one-on-one interventions.

The first Istation assessment in September showed that 13 of my students scored below the 50th percentile, and three were in need of critical intervention, meaning that they scored at or below the 10th percentile. I had 45% of my students in Tier 3 and 20% in Tier 2 for letter knowledge. Another weak area for my class was phonemic awareness. I had 25% of my students in Tiers 2 and 3. After pinpointing my students’ deficiencies, I began supplementing my whole-group phonics curriculum to add skills such as rhyming and word awareness.

For my small-group sessions, I grouped students based on the Priority Report. This way, I could provide students in Tier 3 more practice time with their problem areas, while the students in Tier 1 could continue to challenge themselves and grow as readers.

After one month my students took a second assessment, and only 26% of my students were still in Tier 3 for letter knowledge! Phonemic awareness was also greatly improved with 89% of my students in Tier 1. Additionally, I had two students move from Tier 3 to Tier 2 in just one month.

I am grateful for the intensive analytics that Istation’s website provides. Now that we have access to learning paths, students will be able to benefit from more one-on-one time, and I will have more data to see trends in overall class learning. I look forward to the growth of my students as we continue down the path of unlocking their superhero potential.
