Pioneer Regional School Corporation in Indiana is using Istation data to drive classroom instruction.
“The biggest benefit [of Istation] is the differentiated instruction, the help that we get in RTI, and how it helps us meet the needs of the kids and move them from one tier to another,” Spear said.
At Pioneer Elementary School, the principal meets with the teachers every six weeks to go over student weaknesses and discuss how everyone can work together to improve their results. Teachers from different grade levels work together in small groups and compare Istation reports. In these meetings, teachers can discuss areas of weakness and what each grade level can do to overcome these weaknesses.
“We really like the quickness of the reports,” Spear explained. “We can take an assessment, and immediately the teacher gets feedback. And it’s the same with the student. At the end of each session, they get that feedback: how they did last time compared to this time. It really gives them the ability to set goals and say ‘I want to do a little better this time. I want to make my green bar go up.’”
The district also utilizes Istation Home. Students in 3rd grade are required to spend 20 minutes three times per week on Istation Reading outside of school. This gives them more practice with reading and helps prepare them for the end-of-year IREAD test. Students must pass this test in order to progress to the 4th grade.
Spear also noted how well Istation captivates students: “Even the kindergartners who are prone to wiggle around are immediately engaged during Istation time. It’s a very quick process. Even though the data gets better the longer you use Istation and the more time you invest in it, you can see that upward trend right away. It’s infectious.”
