District Administration’s Districts of Distinction program celebrates excellence and innovation in K-12 education. Istation is thrilled to be the platinum sponsor for this year’s program and to highlight the many honorees from across the nation. Today we showcase a couple of districts in the summer program category.
In Texas, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD wanted to stop the summer slide in reading achievement that seemed to affect young learners each year. District leaders set up a six-week summer camp for any K-2 student lacking readiness or struggling to stay on pace.
During the summer camp, educators emphasized developing oral language skills and hands-on active learning experiences. Students rotated to a new activity every half hour, which kept energy and interest high.
Around 3,000 students participated, and by the end of summer, 96% of them showed no summer slide in reading ability. Among the students, 84% moved up one or more reading levels.
Similarly Donna ISD (also in Texas) saw a need during the school year and worked to bridge the gap for students during the summer months. Donna students were not enrolling in AP or dual-enrollement classes until their senior year of high school.
The district wanted to provide more college and career opportunities to students before they reached high school. Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM) was created. The program allows middle school students who are taking Algebra I pre-AP to take Geometry pre-AP during the summer for advancement and full state credit. Students in 9th and 10th grade who are currently taking Algebra II pre-AP or college algebra courses can take Precalculus pre-AP during the summer for advancement and full state credit.
Math performance soared! On the Texas Academic Performance Report, Donna’s 8th graders increased their math scores from 80% in 2016 to 90% in 2018. The district also met 10 out of 16 indicators in mathematics on the Performance-Based Monitoring Analysis System.
