Michele Lovett is a 1st grade teacher at Waldron Elementary in Arkansas. She entered Istation’s Red Cape Moment Contest in the fall of 2017. We love hearing how she uses Istation’s Teacher Directed Lessons, on demand assessments, and home resources daily. Read how Istation helps make her life easier.
Resources are vital to a teacher’s success. Many websites tailored towards helping students learn to read lack in providing resources for the teacher to use outside of lesson time to reinforce core information. Istation has over 2,400 Teacher Directed Lessons for small groups, along with interactive books ready to be downloaded, complete bibliographies for reading lessons, and even guides on how to use the assessment information to its full potential. I have read every Istation board and immediately downloaded resources that I wanted to use. For others, I saved them to my favorites for future use. I use these resources to continue to promote student growth in the classroom and at home.
Teacher Directed Lessons and On-Demand Assessments
Currently, I use the teacher-directed interventions during my small-group lessons. While the data allows me to know what topics to focus on, there are times when I do not know how to properly address these problem areas. The teacher-directed interventions alleviate that issue for me.
I also utilize the on demand assessments after two weeks to ensure that students are truly grasping the concepts and that the intervention was a success. Before I even began to use the small-group lessons, I had to learn exactly which students should be in a group together. The Istation assessment showed which students belonged in each tier, but there were far too many students in tier 3 and 2 to have one group for each. To cleave the groups into smaller ones based on skill deficiencies, I focused on the Priority Report data. The Priority Report also helps me plan face-to-face interventions, and I can document and save intervention work within the report.
Istation at Home
Students must also have the opportunity to continue to practice what they learn in the classroom at home. I sent home Istation’s School to-Home Connection pamphlet and enabled the Parent Portal so that parents can have access to the Student Summary handout and the Skill Growth Detail reports. Parents are able to see what their students are learning, and they get to take part in the journey with their children as they become fluent readers.
There is no greater feeling than that of success as I watch each of my students grow as individuals and readers. I get to watch them forge friendships with one another and learn about the ever-changing range of human emotion. I am blessed with the opportunity to watch them discover the vast world that is out there through the wonders of reading. Istation’s versatility allows for me to reach the maximum amount of success that both myself and my students can reach. I am grateful for my district’s choice in using Istation, and I will continue to learn how to use Istation to its full potential.
