Learn Why Measuring Oral Reading Fluency Is So Important

In today’s rapidly changing education landscape, leaders in the industry are embracing both technology and data to support educators and students in many ways. One of the basics of education is literacy, and oral reading fluency (ORF) is key to improving it. But why does this metric matter?

Peter Jacobson, a product manager at Istation, sits down with MarketScale to discuss the importance of oral reading fluency. Jacobson discusses...

  • how cutting-edge technology makes measuring ORF skills easy;
  • why ORF is important to a student’s overall literacy goals; and
  • how the global pandemic has changed how we view assessment and instructional interventions.

Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP) ORF, developed in partnership with Boulder Learning, Inc.,  leverages state-of-the-art innovations in voice recognition and digital recording technology specifically designed for young, nascent readers.

Students make recordings of themselves reading grade-leveled passages, which then pass through carefully calibrated acoustic models in order to produce auto-scores. Teachers can make immediate data-driven decisions from color-coded reports. Recordings are available for review in an online archive, and teachers have the ability to override auto-scores at any time using the manual scoring interface.
