How to Perform Instructional Interventions While Coping with the Coronavirus Pandemic

When we return to school in the fall, educators might be leading school-wide interventions instead of individual instructional interventions used in the past. We know we will need to gauge where each student is and what they need to catch up. Many students may not have gotten the hands-on learning they needed to master objectives taught in the final quarter of the school year.

“We’re missing two and a half months of critical instruction time. End-of-the-year instruction is critical for kids. That’s when a lot of those more difficult standards are taught,” said DeAn Jeffrey, Istation strategic PD specialist. “Without intervention support systems, students who were struggling when we left school are only going to be further behind.”

With such a big challenge ahead, what will instructional interventions for all look like?

“I really think that is the tough one, because how do you remotely get the data you need to determine where you need to start with them? I think that’s the struggle a lot of districts and schools are working on right now. How are they going to get the data they need?” said Ginger Brawley, Istation strategic PD specialist.
