Maud Elementary Wins Istation’s 2017 Red Cape Moment Contest (Texas Region)

by Rachel Vitemb on December 5, 2017

Tyler Cole, a reading specialist aid at Maud Elementary School in Texas, wowed us with her winning submission for the Red Cape Moment Contest. Read more about her experiences using Istation’s data and resources and see how her school motivates students with red capes! Here we share her original submission, lightly edited for clarity.

Tell us how Istation data has improved a classroom’s or student’s performance.

Our elementary school has been able to take the data given to us by Istation and use it to build upon.

Each month, after the ISIP is finished by our students from each class (K-5), we take the data to analyze it and create a game plan to help the kids who are in need of that extra help. Our intervention room teachers monitor progress made by these students.

Overall, the data provided by Istation allows all of our teachers access to a quick overview of where their students are at each month.

How do you motivate students to use Istation?

Our motivation strategy is something new for us this year. My partner, Tammie Dickens, and I bought Istation capes this summer along with t-shirts and masks to go around the classrooms and explained to the students that they could have an opportunity to wear a “cool cape” too.

All the students would have to do in order to get the chance to wear a cape and mask was simply improve their score on the ISIP test, even if it was by one point. The class that improved the most would take pictures in the cape and mask and also get their picture hung on our “Istation Super Stars” wall in the hallway.

So far this has been a huge success, but our students wish that they could each keep their own cape to take home.

How do you use Istation resources?

We use our Chromebooks along with our computer lab that fits 21 students total. We rotate teachers and their classes on a weekly schedule to obtain students’ 30 minutes for the week; the rest is up to my partner and me to help the other students who require more minutes for the week.

Congratulations to Maud Elementary in Maud ISD for their fantastic submission and soaring #redcape moments! Stay tuned on social media for announcements about Istation’s Usage with Fidelity contest, beginning January 2018.
